Indian Teen Portrait
Project Exhibit
Come see portraits created by ten metro area American Indian teens. The exhibit is the culmination of eight weeks (16 sessions) of work by ten American Indian teens from around the metro area. Over the course of this program, the students have looked at the fine art and photography collections at the Minnesota Historical Society, visited contemporary art shows by American Indian artists, worked with five young artist mentors, and learned the basics of photography. Storybook Reading/Make a Dreamcatcher
Come by the Mille Lacs Indian Museum anytime from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm on January 12th and listen to museum staff read storybooks while we serve a light snack and refreshments. Then from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm we will teach kids how to weave a dream catcher to take home. The dream catcher is a woven web believed to protect the dream world of the person who sleeps beneath it. The reading of the storybooks is free. The cost for the dream catcher kit is $5 which includes materials for the dream catcher and an instructional handout. Please allow an hour to make the craft. This project is recommended for children ages 8 and up. Cost for dream catcher kit does not include admission to museum. Second Chance Day
on the Hill 2013
The Minnesota Second Chance Coalition is a partnership of over 65 organizations that advocate for fair and responsible laws, policies, and practices that allow those who have committed crimes to redeem themselves. Each year the Second Chance Coalition brings hundreds of ex-offenders and their supporters to the Minnesota State Capitol to rally and meet with legislators. 10:00 am -12:00 pm at the MN State Capitol Rotunda. The Swarm Native American Heritage Night
The local Native American community and the Swarm have organized a night to celebrate American Indian heritage and to educate everyone in attendance about how lacrosse was originated by Native American communities. This is an event to excite the American their sport in addition to the recognition of the native youth that participated in summer lacrosse camps! The event will feature Pre-game (Washington @ Minnesota) activities including American Indian drum group performing on the turf and a traditional Native American lacrosse game at halftime demonstrated by members of the Oneida and Menominee Tribes. 7 pm at Treasure Island Field at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. Ojibwe Mitten Workshop
Learn techniques for working with leather at this two-day workshop and create a pair of Ojibwe style mittens to take home. Registration is required by January 23. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided both days. A minimum of 5 participants required to host workshop. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. History Lounge: Dakota
Peace Coalition
Most Dakota people living in Minnesota in 1862 did not anticipate or participate in the U.S.-Dakota War. In this History Lounge, Historian Carrie Reber Zeman uncovers the story of the Dakota resistance movement, known historically as the Peace Coalition. Zeman brings the diverse voices of this anti-war coalition to light, using their own narratives to illuminate who they were, what galvanized their opposition, what they accomplished and what happened to them in the war’s terrible aftermath. Zeman argues that the Dakota men and women who actively worked to end the war were motivated by their desire to stay in Mni Sota Makoce, the Dakota homeland. Zeman is an independent historian specializing in the context and historiography of the U.S- Dakota War of 1862. Zeman edited and annotated the 2012 edition of Mary Butler Renville’s 1863 book, "A Thrilling Narrative of Indian Captivity: Dispatches from the Dakota War" (University of Nebraska Press).
