ricey wild.jpgJust now as of this writing I confirmed plans to attend the Stop the Wolf Hunt rally in St. Paul, Minn. I was told too that I could speak! Iíll give that some thought because this slaughter of our brother wolf is so disgusting and completely horrid that I will probably break down and sob at the wolvesí deaths that never had to happen at all. In my estimation wolves are necessary to the environment as water, sunlight and food. Humans are the only creature that kills for pleasure in addition to being a heinous scourge on our Mother Earth.

The culture of fear of wolves was brought over by the Europeans whose domestic animals were sometimes preyed upon. Everywhere in fables, pop culture and the current war on wolves are blatant lies. Little Red Riding Hood and the BIG BAD WOLF, The THREE LITTLE PIGS and WEREWOLVES are the most recognized stories about this magnificent, family-oriented animal. As a child I was puzzled why wolves were so awful but didnít question it because I was a little kid and no one told me any different. I donít have that blind ignorance anymore and my participation in the rally which will have occurred before this publication is done, for now.

The easy thing to do is gripe about the horrific Polar Vortex II and how Iíve been huddled in front of my little space heater at home with the temp set at 58 degrees because I dare not put it any higher. Propane is used to heat my house and prices just skyrocketed to almost five bucks a gallon! Oops! I see that I have indeed just complained about the frigidly cold weather up here but I see on national news Iím certainly not alone. A Facebook friend posted a picture of severely frostbitten feet which is hard to look at but it must be harder to feel. But of course all this extreme weather we are experiencing has nothing to do with climate change. So I suppose we can all just diddley-bop along or stick our heads in the sand or snow banks.

Well Ö This is the month for New Yearís resolutions, which I donít like making but if I'm gonna get anything for next Christmas I better start being good. Oh wait! I don't 'do' that holiday anymore! Not for any Grinchy reasons though; mostly because the first family Christmas gathering I had in my Rez house 10 years ago began fantastically but ended in angry shouts, fists being shaken and dark vows of never dampening my doorstep again. Good times, good times Ö Not!

ricey wild.jpgHere is Ďtis the season upon us once again. This is not my favorite time of year because of all the distraction of Christmas holiday shopping and of course Black Friday. Ish. The zombies will be out trying to get deals on stuff, just stuff. Stuff they already have at that; itís my firm belief that we Americans are being mind-controlled by massive yet shady corporations. They work to get us to become super-consumers, becoming only numbers tallied in quarterly sales reports. There is no day that goes by that the DOW or NASDAQ isnít mentioned as a barometer for our nationís health.

For the record I am a human being; I am not merely a consumer.

ricey wild.jpgIt has been 15 years since my column has been published and Iím smiling all big! My humble thanks go out to Sue who was editor of The Circle News in 1998 and to Paul De Main, editor of News From Indian Country who picked up my column soon thereafter. The column began as ďIt ainít easy being IndianÖbut someoneís got to do itĒ by Kristine Shotley. Cat Whipple shortened the title to what it is today but my picture has stayed the same in The Circle so here I am in 2013.
