IHS Behavioral Health Conference
The Indian Health Service Division of Behavioral Health is proud to present the 2009 National Behavioral Health Conference, the nation’s premier opportunity for collaboration, networking, strategy-building, and knowledge-sharing

for behavioral health care providers working in Indian Country. This year’s conference explores innovative and best practice approaches to behavioral health integration while honoring and demonstrating a commitment to Native traditional ways. Artists of Color
Residency Opps
Opportunity for Artists of Color From the Alliance of Artists Communities: In partnership with The Joyce Foundation and a number of leading Midwest artist residency programs, including Anderson Center in Red Wing, we are continuing the Midwestern Voices and Visions (MWV&V) project, a multi-year initiative which seeks to provide talented yet under-recognized artists of color living in the Midwest with their first residency experience. The MWV&V application period end August 15. Artists of color working in all disciplines (visual and literary arts, music, performance-based media, etc.) are eligible to apply. They must be permanent residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, or Wisconsin, and not currently students. In addition, they must not have previously participated in an artist residency program. Artists may either apply online (at http://www.midwestvoicesandvisions.org) or by mail. Seven artists will be selected on October 7-8, to be in residence in 2010. The length of each residency will vary from one to three months, depending on which residency program the artist is paired with. The seven participating programs are Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Red Wing, Minnesota; Art Farm in Marquette, Nebraska; Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska; John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Ox-Bow in Saugatuck, Michigan; Prairie Center of the Arts in Peoria, Illinois; and Ragdale Foundation in Lake Forest, Illinois. The Sixth Annual Ride for Survival
Motorcyclists from around the state are invited to take part in a 75 mile scenic ride through the Minnesota countryside. Sponsored by Women on Wheels®. Contributions go to support Day One®, a statewide response system providing immediate access to safety for battered women and their children. Day One® works with domestic violence programs throughout the state, including four shelters that serve Native communities in Duluth, Wauconia, Red Lake, and the Twin Cities. Vision Maker Video
Youth Contest
VisionMaker Video, a product of NAPT, is accepting online entries for the youth VisionMaker Video Contest. Contestants will produce a short video that relates to this year’s theme: “Youth Choices, Elder Voices.” The contest is open to legal residents of the U.S. and its territories who are 14-21 years of age at the time of entry. There is no entry fee. The top five videos will be screened at the biennial VisionMaker Film Festival Oct. 30-Nov. 5 in Lincoln, Neb. Native Film Feast
A Harvest of Fresh Videos: All My Relations arts program will debut Magic Wands by videographer Elizabeth Day (Bush Artists Fellow) along with new shorts by Jonathan Thunder, and a presentation of Hawk’s Eye by Barbara Britain—a documentary recorded in Ancient Trader’s Gallery. Other short works by American Indian film-makers to be announced. 7 p.m. In Magic Wands an Ojibwe elder (speaking Ojibwemowin) tells her granddaughter the story of a young boy who experiences wild ricing for the first time. The boy is captivated by the power of his ricing sticks, which he believes to be “magic wands.” Immersed in the unfamiliar terrain of lake marshes he learns to master the artful skill of knocking wild rice and discovers the strength of spirit required to harvest this staple. As the grandmother narrates the tale in Ojibwe, she answers her granddaughter’s question about the sacredness and importance of wild rice to the Ojibwe people.
