Darryl “Sonny” Wayne Hill whose Ojibwe name is “Waubun” (which mean “tomorrow”) died on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Bethel Care Center in St. Paul, MN. Darryl was from Red Lake, and 49 years old. He was born July 4, 1959 in Cass Lake, MN and was the son of Frank and Alice (Ellis) Hill. He was raised and educated in Minneapolis. He worked as a commercial fisherman and landscaper. He spent his summers at Red Lake and returned to live there. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and like to play cards and board games.

Darryl is survived by 2 sisters, Linda Hill Mattson and Bonita Hill; 2 brothers, Gregory Hill and Jeremy Hill; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, brother, Faron Hill and sister, Lanette Hill. Traditional Funeral Services were held May 21 at the Little Rock Community Center in Red Lake with spiritual leader Greg Kingbird. Interment was at the St. Mary’s Mission Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
