Submission Deadline: August 10th, 2009

A project of Catalyst, curated by Carolyn Anderson & Emily Johnson

The art exhibit, This is Displacement: Native Artists Consider the Relationship Between Land & Identity, will open at Out North in Anchorage, Alaska on October 8th, 2009 & will run through the month of October.  The exhibit is being curated by Emily Johnson (Yup’ik) & Carolyn Anderson (Diné) & will be shown along with The Thank-you Bar, a two-room multi-disciplinary performance of dance, storytelling, visual image & live music that asks the question, "what is a true home?"  The Thank-you Bar is created & performed by Emily Johnson & composers, James Everest & Joel Pickard with beadwork by Karen Beaver.

The Exhibit:  We are looking for artwork in any medium including two & three-dimensional art, word art (poetry, essays or short stories), short films/video, and recorded sound art (music/stories/sound collage) that overtly or subtly deals with displacement. We are defining displacement broadly because it needs a broad definition. We know displacement does not always come from an outside force and that it is sometimes felt as an intense connection TO a place other than home-land.  We know that Native people have a unique & distinctive relationship to displacement’s ills, & Native people have many different perspectives on displacement.

Submission Guidelines:

Two & Three-Dimensional Art:  You may submit no more than 3 total works of art & a total of 6 images if you’re sending details of your work.   We DO NOT require that you send professional reproductions; it is perfectly acceptable to use a digital camera.  Images must be sent as jpgs, & make sure that your e-mail is no larger than 4mb.  If necessary, you may send your images in two separate e-mails.
