Washington, D.C. (AP) – The Indian Health Service continues to lose property at an alarming rate, according to a draft Government Accountability Office report obtained by The Arizona Daily Star.

IHS has lost track of $3.5 million in equipment recently. That’s in addition to the $15.9 million that went unaccounted for when the GAO released a report on the issue in July 2008.

The  Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing on the prior report in July 2008, but then-IHS director Robert McSwain disputed the extent of the problem. The new report suggests that top IHS leaders have done little to address the situation.

The report will be released to the public in July.
