Indian Month Kick Off
Come celebrate community and the start of MN American Indian Month at the 2013 MN American Indian Month Kickoff Parade and Celebration. Beginning at 9:30 am at Cedar Field‚ Little Earth of United Tribes, Minneapolis, MN. Please join us for the Parade of Nations and show your pride wearing regalia, ribbon shirts and shawls. Community-based organizations and groups are encouraged to carry banners, puppets, etc. and walk in the parade from Little Earth of United Tribes to the Minneapolis American Indian Center. Spring Schedule
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) helps local organizations and Minnesota tribal communities through its mobile medical clinic, the SMSC Mobile Unit which provides health screenings, mammograms, vision and dental services, and other prevention and education services. Anyone wishing to schedule a mammogram or dental appointment may contact the deployment site or tribal health clinic directly. To request on-site services from the SMSC Mobile Unit, contact Mobile Unit Coordinator Christine Michael at 952-233-2964 or visit: www.mdfire.org and click”Mobile Unit” to find a request form. 2014 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Artist Fellowships
American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian artists are encouraged to apply for the 2014 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Artist Fellowships before May 3. This unique national fellowship honors excellence by Native artists in six disciplines: dance, filmmaking, literature, music, traditional arts and visual arts. Ranging from $10,000 to $20,000, the fellowships awarded. Artists who are members of federally and state-recognized U.S. tribes, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities can apply. Powwow For Hope is a fundraiser for the American Indian Cancer Foundation. All money raised will be used to support cancer education and supportive services for American Indian communities. Remembering and Honoring our Dakota Grandmothers
On May 4th, 1863 the 1300 surviving women, children and elders at the Fort Snelling concentration camp were forcibly removed on cattle boat steamers to Fort Thompson (Crow Creek), S. D. At the time of imprisonment, on November 13th 1862, the Dakota numbered 1700. There will be a program and ceremony to "Remember and Honor our Dakota Grandmothers" at the concentration camp site in Fort Snelling State Park beginning at 12:30 pm. Program: Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa, Larry Long, Jim Anderson, Dr. Waziyatawin, and others. Commemorative Ceremony: Phyllis RedDay. A simple meal of soup, bread, and water will be served following the ceremony. Everyone is invited to participate. No photography during the ceremony. Al Hunter and Friends
The Birchbark Books Reading Series presents Al Hunter and friends. Al Hunter is an Anishinaabe writer from Rainy River First Nations, Manitou Rapids, Ontario.His poetry has been widely published and anthologized. Beautiful Razor is his most recent book of poetry published in 2012. Al is a spoken work performer and the author of three books of poetry including Spirit Horses and The Recklessness of Love. Local poets Marcie Rendon and Heid Erdrich will also read from Sing: Poetry from the Indigenous Americas. An Evening with Louise Erdrich
The Friends of the Libraries present An Evening with Louise Erdrich. Erdrich is the author of fourteen novels as well as volumes of poetry, short stories, children’s books, and a memoir of early motherhood. Her novel Love Medicine won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse was a finalist for the National Book Award. The Plague of Doves won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Most recently, The Round House won the 2012 National Book Award for fiction. 5:30 p.m. – Awards Presentation and Reception. 6:15 p.m. – Dinner and meeting. 8:00 p.m. – Presentation by Louise Erdrich. Anymore Exhibit
Opening and reception of “Your Indian Anymore” The American Indian Movement presents its first photographic art exhibit, featuring photographs by Roger Woo and Dick Bancroft. Also included are historic objects and documents from AIM’s history. Exhibit runs May 10 to June 30. Reception from 6 pm to 10 pm. Traditional Native foods served. Free. Applications available for Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship at the U of MN for 2013-2014 academic year. SMSC scholarship program supports incoming U of MN freshmen and transfer students with financial need. May also be awarded to qualified, newly admitted graduate and professional students in specific disciplines. Criteria: Admission to one of the U of MN’s five campuses (Twin Cities, Crookston, Duluth, Morris, or Rochester) as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student; Enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or students who qualify under the Indian Education Act; A focus in medicine, dentistry/health, public health, engineering, business administration/accounting, math, science, technology, public policy, government administration, education or law.
