The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) helps local organizations and Minnesota tribal communities through its mobile medical clinic, the SMSC Mobile Unit which provides health screenings, mammograms, vision and dental services, and other prevention and education services. Anyone wishing to schedule a mammogram or dental appointment may contact the deployment site or tribal health clinic directly. Kids Crafts
Come by the Mille Lacs Indian Museum anytime from 11 am to 3 pm and we will teach a basic stringing technique to participants to bead a ring and take home. Please allow an hour to make the ring. Walking in Two Worlds Conference & Symposium
Presenters will discuss their unique perspectives on the two world experience of Native Americans trying to maintain their cultural identity while at the same time surviving in contemporary mainstream society. Featured keynote speaker will be Anton Treuer, PhD – Author of “Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask” and “The Assassination of Hole In The Day.” Events are free and open to the public.Alvord Theatre, Northland College. Dinner & Live Auction Fundraiser
The Nagaajiwanaang Ojibwemowin Language Camp dinner & live auction fundraiser will help raise money for the 5th Annual Ojibwe language camp. Dinner menu will consist of: homemade meatloaf, baked potato, corn, cornbread and cake. The entertainment will be fluent Ojibwe speaker, language instructor, and Nagaajiwanaang Ojibwemowin Camp Co-Founder Rick Gresczyk, who will also act as the auctioneer for the live auction. Rick will be auctioning our auction items in the Ojibwemowin language and English! Quality donation items are needed for Live Auction. We are asking for donations for our Live Auction to help make our fundraising efforts successful. If you are interested in donating an item(s) of value please contact the planning committee members. The Auction/Dinner will be held starting at 4:00 pm at the Sawyer Community Center, 3243 Moorhead Road, in Sawyer, Minnesota. Fee: $10.00 per plate. The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters
The Dakota Prisoner of War Letters/ Dakota Kaskapi Okicize Wowapi. Translated by Clifford Canku and Michael Simon. Introduction by John Peacock. The translators will introduce the book project and sign books which will be for sale at the event. Fifty extraordinary letters written by Dakota men imprisoned after the U.S. Dakota War of 1862 give direct witness to a harsh and painful history shared by Minnesotans today. In April 1863—after the U.S. Dakota War of 1862, after the hanging of thirty-eight Dakota men in the largest mass execution in U.S. History— some 270 Dakota men were moved from Mankato, to a prison at camp McClellan in Davenport, Iowa. Separated from their wives, children, and elder relatives, with inadequate shelter, they lived there for three years. More than 120 men died. Desperate to connect with their families, many of these prisoners of war learned to write. Their letters, mostly addressed to the missionaries Stephen R. Riggs and Thomas S. Williamson, asked for information, for assistance, and for help sending and receiving news of their loved ones. Dakota elders Clifford Canku and Michael Simon, fluent Dakota speakers, provide both the Dakota transcription and the first published English translation of fifty of these letters. 7:00 p.m. Hosted by Birchbark Books at Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church, 2020 W Lake of the Isles Pkwy, Minneapolis.

NHCC Earth Week
North Hennepin Community College holds its annual Earth Week from April 20-27, with events and speakers that will educate the campus and wider community about Building Sustainable Communities. Guest speakers and performers include Dennis Banks, Hoka Hey Drum Group, Dr. Joy DeGruy, Duniya Drum and Dance Group, Allison Warden, Kevin Winge, Asad Aliweyd, Ladonna Redmond, Song Lo, the Roe Family Singers. Featured Native Events: Calling All Polar Bears with Allison Warden, Cultural Program with Dennis Banks, Osseo’s 18th Annual Indian Education Day & Wacipi. All events are free and open to the public. Mini-Tekakwitha Conference
A regional conference for Native American Catholics of Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Nebraska and parts of Canada (Winnepeg). This is a great opportunity to get together with people to share Native spirituality. We especially want to invite people from the Twin Cities area since this conference is usually held on reservations throughout the region. All are welcome. Sweetgrass Basket Workshop
Learn the art of making a coil sweetgrass basket in this two-day workshop. Sweetgrass is a fragrant sacred herb used in ceremony and artworks throughout Ojibwe country. Discounted hotel rooms are available for workshop participants on Saturday night at Grand Casino Mille Lacs. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided both days. A minimum of 5 participants required to host workshop. Registration is required by Wednesday April 24th. Cost is $60 for public and $55 for MN Historical Society members. Additional supply fee of $15. Days and times are April 27th from noon to 4 pm, and April 28th from 10 am to 2 pm. Indian Month Kick Off
Come celebrate community and the start of MN American Indian Month at the 2013 MN American Indian Month Kickoff Parade and Celebration. Beginning at 9:30 am at Cedar Field‚ Little Earth of United Tribes, Minneapolis, MN. Please join us for the Parade of Nations and show your pride wearing regalia, ribbon shirts and shawls. Community-based organizations and groups are encouraged to carry banners, puppets, etc. and walk in the parade from Little Earth of United Tribes to the Minneapolis American Indian Center. 2014 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Artist Fellowships
American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian artists are encouraged to apply for the 2014 Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Artist Fellowships before May 3. This unique national fellowship honors excellence by Native artists in six disciplines: dance, filmmaking, literature, music, traditional arts and visual arts. Ranging from $10,000 to $20,000, the fellowships awarded. Artists who are members of federally and state-recognized U.S. tribes, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities can apply.
