FallenStar: The Watchoverers
Fallenstar: The Watchoverers is about three cousins who find a meteorite that gives them superpowers. United by a shared sense of purpose, the cousins embrace their roles as heroes, combining forces to become Fallenstar. Their newfound powers are immediately tested when they encounter the Earthchomper, a formidable foe with a destructive agenda to capture the meteorite. The youth must confront this danger to protect their world from being consumed by its mindless destruction of the earth. Strengthened by their unique abilities and familial bond, the play shows how ordinary individuals can become extraordinary when they work together. Writen by Ramón Esquivel. Directed by Alejandro Tey. The play features a cast of Minneapolis and St. Paul Native American actors. The play’s production will include puppetry by Jonathan Boyd. It will premiere in collaboration with Duluth Playhouse at the NorShor Theatre October 11 through October 13. The play will then tour schools in the Twin Cities October 16 through October 25, and end with a one week run at the Minneapolis American Indian Center October 30 through November 3. Hahá Wakpádan Loopet Loppet
Through new and reimagined events, we’re celebrating Dakota people, land, and traditions along Hahá Wakpádan, the Dakota name for Bassett Creek. The Loopet Loppet, now known as the Hahá Wakpádan Loopet Loppet will maintain our marque 6-hour or 12-hour events. Come solo or as a team of 4 to run or walk as many 5-mile loops as possible. We’ll also have a Loopet for kids. And a new 5k Fun Run. This untimed event is perfect for running or walking along the creek, either solo or with friends. All events will start and finish at the Trailhead, where we’ll have an Indigenous People’s festival for everyone to enjoy. It will feature Native vendors, chefs, running groups, artists, storytellers, and community partners. Take part in sharing Dakota traditions through education, crafts and games. Gerald Vizenor and Kim Blaeser
The Department of English is proud to present the inaugural Gerald Vizenor Lecture, honoring the acclaimed Anishinaabe author of more than 40 works of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. The illustrious evening will feature Vizenor reading and in conversation with past Wisconsin Poet Laureate Kimberly Blaeser, together representing two generations of internationally recognized literary artists from the White Earth Reservation of the Anishinaabe in Minnesota. The 2024 Mackey Chair in Creative Writing at Beloit College, Blaeser is a Professor Emerita at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and an MFA faculty member for Institute of American Indian Arts. 7-8pm.
