Tucson, AZ (AP) – The Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona will issue special ID cards to members who cross the U.S.-Mexico border. The tribe reached an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to issue the cards which will be used instead of passports. The tribe has about 16,000 members in the U.S. An estimated 40,000 more Yaquis live in Mexico.

Beginning June 1, U.S. citizens entering the country from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda will be required to present a passport or other document recognized under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a program designed to stiffen border security.

To date, only a few U.S. Indian tribes have been authorized to use enrollment cards for border entry.
