darlene jacksonDarlene Vivian Jackson White Eagle, "Awanook" which means "Morning Mist", "Wa-Wokiye-Wiyah", which means "Woman who helps them", 70, of South St. Paul, MN, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at the United Hospital in St. Paul with her family by her side.
She was born on March 30, 1941 in Cass Lake to Robert and Evelyn (Mink) Jackson. Darlene was involved in several Dakota, Lakota, and Ojibwe ceremonies. She was a traditional dancer and AIM member. She loved wolves. Her traditional activities included Sundance ceremonies, sweat lodge ceremonies, Mexica ceremonies; and all cultural activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Deforest White Eagle. Darlene is survived by sister; Barbara Erickson of Minneapolis, brother; George Jackson of Pennington, adopted daughter Dana (Clay) Crawford of Cass Lake, many nieces, nephews, friends and family.
A wake service was held on April 17 at Indian Ministries in Minneapolis. More wake services were held in Cass Lake on April 18, with burial being held on April 19. Pallbearers were Clay Crawford, Sr., Shorty Crawford, Marquel Crawford, Antonio Valtierra, Yoel Gavilan-Cuate and Vicente Inamagua. Honorary pallbearers will be all nieces and nephews, AIM, All Ojibwe, Dakota and Lakota Nations, Mexica Dancers, Sundancers, family and friends. Interment was at the Prince of Peace Cemetery in Cass Lake, MN. Online condolences for the family may be given at www.northernpeace.com
