“Water is Life,” a free public walk and rally, will focus attention on the barrels of toxic military waste that were dumped into Lake Superior near Duluth between 1957 and 1962. Of 1,457 drums that were dumped only 9 have ever been recovered, and all of them were found to contain as many as 17 toxic chemical and heavy metals from Honeywell company’s Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant.

The event is scheduled for Lake Superior Day, Sunday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Duluth. Starting at the tug boat at the Marine Museum in Canal Park at 11:00 a.m., the 2.2-mile walk will proceed over the foot bridge, pass the Aquarium, over the 5th Ave. E. viaduct, pass the Depot, then move east along Superior Street to the Lakewalk bridge at lst Ave. E. and end with a rally at Endion Beach starting at 12:30 p.m.

Speaking at the rally will be former chair of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Jean Buffalo; poet and former Chief of the Rainy River First Nation in northwest Ontario Al Hunter; Duluth poet Allie Schoenfeld; and singer-songwriters Rachael Kilgour and Robi Meyerson.
