Meeting Actor Adam Beach
(By Rachel Peirce) In June actor Adam Beach (Aboriginal Saulteaux tribe of Canada) made an impromptu appearance at the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe’s 21st Annual Hinckley Competition Powwow. The contest powwow was held from June 15 through June 17 at the Grand Casino Hinckley powwow grounds.
On Friday evening people excitely gathered around the arrival of Beach, who has appeared in Smoke Signals, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Ladies began to scream and the audience cheered loudly until Beach borrowed the microphone from the M.C. to tell his fans that regrettably he was not single and had brought his girlfriend with him (actress Leah Gibson).
I was lucky to get a moment of Beach’s time. I had my almost two-year old baby, daughter in my arms. I was honored that Beach made a cameo appearance at Hinckley, and hundreds of other American Indian women that day were too.
IHB providers to begin electron prescriptions in August
Indian Health Board (IHB) providers will begin electronic prescriptions in August. There will be changes in how new prescriptions are filled and how requests for refills are handled.
Instead of writing out a prescription on a piece of paper, doctors will use a computer system to send prescriptions directly to the pharmacy.
Electronic prescriptions are sent using a private, secure, and closed network, and prescription information is secure.
Prescriptions can sent to any pharmacy. Patients choose which pharmacy to send the prescriptions to. Currently, more than 75 percent of U.S. pharmacies accept electronic prescriptions. For patients who do not want their prescription to be sent electronically, the doctor will print out the prescription for them.
Electronic prescriptions are fast and convenient. Patients won’t have to make an extra trip to drop off their prescription at the pharmacy. Storing information about your medications electronically can help also office keep track of medications and may help to prevent allergic reactions and drug-to-drug reactions.
PATIENT TIPS
o Choose a pharmacy to send prescriptions to.
o Allow 10-20 minutes for the prescription to arrive at the pharmacy.
o When you arrive at the pharmacy, let the pharmacist know that your prescription was sent electronically from our office.
o Some medications will still require paper prescriptions. Prescriptions for some pain medications and other "controlled substances" cannot be sent electronically.
Prescription Refills
o Call your pharmacy when you need to get more refills on your prescription. The pharmacy will send an electronic request to the doctor’s office.
o Plan ahead. Electronic refill requests can happen quickly, but like other types of requests, prescriptions with zero refills may take up to four (4) days to get approval.
o Call the pharmacy to make sure your refills are ready before you go to pick them up.
NSAAP to hold first charitable golf tournament
The North Star AISES Alliance & Professional chapter (NSAAP) is hosting its first annual charitable golf tournament at the Black Bear golf course on August 24th in Carlton, MN. The proceeds will go to further the mission of NSAAP, with some of the proceeds used to help with travel scholarships for their membership to attend the American Indian Science & Engineering. A 4-person scramble will be followed by an awards banquet. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams. Contests will include driving and putting contests, and/or a raffle will be available. Individual golfers are $100.00 and foursomes are $360.00.
