Leech Lake Tribal College Golf Classic results
On June 24th, 116 golfers converged on Long Bow Golf Club to support the 6th annual Leech Lake Tribal College Golf Classic, which raises funds in support of student scholarships at LLTC.
Led by title sponsor Leech Lake Gaming, more than 75 area businesses also joined the event, providing sponsorships and door prizes. It took a score of 57 (15 under par) for the team of Leroy Fairbanks, Scott Jackson, Matt Connor and Dakotah Brunelle to win the event. This year’s tournament netted more than $23,000 for the college’s Leann Dick Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund, which provides scholarships to students studying in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines at Leech Lake Tribal College, has grown to nearly $50,000 in just two years.
Next year’s event is tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 29th, also at Long Bow Golf Club.
New American Indian Health Web portal
A new website is now available that was designed to bring together health and medical resources pertinent to the American Indian population; including policies, consumer health information for everyday people, ways to access healthcare, and research.
This site is designed for health professionals that work with American Indians by providing them with information and tools they can use. It also has easy-to-understand information to help American Indian people learn about their health problems and to help them live healthier.
The Web portal has four sections: Health Topics, People and Traditions, Programs and Services, and Research and Data. The information on the health topics section is designed for all ages, including selections for children and elders. Links are provided to an assortment of documents, Web sites, databases, and other resources.
There are also links to sites with stories of Indian people and their experiences with health problems and how they stay well. Many of these stories are in audio or video format. In addition, there are links to information about research and data suitable for a variety of users. There are also links to medical research articles involving health and disease in American Indians.
The American Indian Health Web portal is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine. The Web site is a collaborative effort between NLM and an American Indian Health User Group which includes representatives from several different tribes. SMSC $50,000 Grant to? American Indian Institute for Innovation to Help Tribal Youth
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community has awarded a grant for $50,000 to the American Institute for Innovation. Shuttle Astronaut John B. Herrington, the first enrolled member of a Native American tribe (Choctaw Nation) to fly in space, serves as Chairman of the Board for the AIII.
The American Indian Institute for Innovation engages American Indian students and their families from high school through college in a year round program, promoting educational success using a nurturing educational community.
The American Indian Institute for Innovation (AIII) educational model prepares future generations of American Indian Leaders to apply Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) based solutions to tribal challenges.
The grant will provide resources to establish tribally centered partnerships in Minnesota focused on youth conversation and on increasing the preparation and graduation of American Indian students from institutions of higher education that have a sense of service and responsibility to tribal communities.
Downtown Hennepin property goes tobacco-free
In March, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners approved a policy prohibiting all tobacco use on all property owned by Hennepin County government. The policy goes into effect on these dates:
o July 1: for all downtown Minneapolis property, including Hennepin County – Minneapolis Central Library
o August 1: for Hennepin County libraries
o September 1: for suburban Hennepin County facilities
o Oct 1: for sites where Hennepin County is the single leasing tenant
The policy applies to: Buildings and grounds of property owned by Hennepin County government and leased properties where Hennepin County is the sole tenant; Parking garages, lots and ramps owned by Hennepin County government; County-owned vehicles and equipment; Personal vehicles on county property; Tobacco use within 45 feet of street-level entrances to county buildings.
The ban includes smoking and use of any other form of tobacco, including chewing tobacco.
