Gilbert Caribou

March 30, 1943 – January 28, 2009

OBIT Gilbert-Caribou.jpgGilbert Caribou, 65, of Grand Portage,

died Jan. 28, 2009 at the Cook County North Shore Hospital. He was born March

30, 1943 to Walter and Alma (Redsky) Caribou in LacLa Croix, Ontario. A member

of the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe, he grew up and graduated from Orr High

School. He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Orleans, France until his

honorable discharge. Later he worked as a iron worker, in education, as a C.D.

counselor, and was employed by Grand Portage Tribal Council as an elected

official for 16 years. He directed the Grand Portage Rendezvous Days

Celebration and enjoyed playing Keno, softball, partridge hunting, watching all

sports and nickels.

He was preceded in death by his parents;

sister, Violet Caribou and brother, Alvin Caribou. Gilbert is survived by his

common law wife Cecelia Vondall; daughter, "Mouse"; step-daughters,

Melissa, Cheri, Lydia and Dama; step-sons, Henry and Clayton Villeburn;

grandchildren, Conrad, Steven, Donovan, Aurora, Anthony, Ethan, John, Lohnen,

Zane, Shylan, Beriah, Aniah, Desi, Skylar, and Caira; brothers, Walter (Doris)

Caribou Jr., Billy Blackwell and sister, Judith (Roger) Hervig. Traditional

Services were held Jan. 31 in the Grand Portage Community Center. Burial was at

the Traditional Cemetery, Grand Portage.

May 24, 1938 – Dec. 8, 2008

Vincent Hill ((Mii Maash Ka Waash,

meaning Thunderbird but translated as Continually Strong in the Wind) of Mille

Lacs Band of Ojibwe passed into the Spirit World on 12/08/2008. He was born in

Onamia, MN 5/24/38. He will be deeply missed, loved and always remembered by

his wife Carol; Children: Joanna, Fred, Rachel; Grandchildren: Chanelle,

Selena, Maximiliam, Aiyana, Aaron, Marissa and Jared.
