July 7 – Aug. 24 Contemporary American Indian Art Exhibit “Transmissions: Contemporary American Indian Art 2003-2013,” features artwork by prominent regional Native artists. The exhibit features artwork by prominent regional artists such as Ahmoo Angeconeb, Frank Big Bear, Jim Denomie, Pat and Gage Kruse, Star Wallowing Bull and Francis Yellow. The display will include drawings, collage works, paintings and sculpture. The artists have worked with a variety of materials including color pencil, acrylic, oil, ink, paper, canvas, birch bark and red willow. On Tuesday, July 9, from 7 pm to 8 pm, acclaimed artist Jim Denomie (Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe) will discuss his paintings in the current Cargill Hall exhibit in the Doty Board Room in Minneapolis Central Library. The exhibit will open July 7 and run through Aug. 24 at the Cargill Hall Gallery in Hennepin County Library – Minneapolis Central, 300 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis. Cargill Hall Gallery hours are: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Both the exhibit and event are free. “Transmissions: Contemporary American Indian Art 2003-2013,” is presented in collaboration with Bockley Gallery, Minneapolis.

Considered a symbol of power, it was used for thousands of years. There are many atlatl petroglyphs carved into the Sioux Quartzite at the site. During this program learn how to use an atlatl while trying to “hunt” a life-size buffalo target. If interested, we would nominate individuals to participate in the Boards and Commissions Leadership 2013-2014 Institute through Nexus Community Partners. The Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute BCLI trains community members and leaders from communities of color to serve on decision-making bodies. A primary goal of the BCLI is to build a progressive network of decision makers and advocates working for more equitable policies on key issues affecting the lives of people of color communities in economic development, employment, health, housing, and transportation in the Twin Cities region. Sept. 23 – 24 Minnesota Indigenous Language Symposium Co-hosted by the Grassroots Indigenous Multimedia and the Grotto Foundation. Held at Mystic Lake Casino and Conference Center, Prior Lake, MN. This year’s theme: Revitalization in Action: Language Learning in Practice, a hands on learning Institute, will feature learning opportunities for curriculum and materials development, teaching indigenous languages, multimedia and technology, best practices, designing and implementing immersion programs, master-apprentice models, evaluation of language programs, teacher certification, innovative language models, grassroots language programs, language documentation and youth voices on language revitalization. The focus is to learn from one another, share information, build support among programs committed to language revitalization. 200 people are expected to attend. The public is invited to attend.
